Wood fuelled heating solutions come in many different specifications and sizes, from simple, log fuelled household boilers to larger scale industrial plant, public buildings and district heating schemes. Technology is also available for combined heat and power (CHP) systems, where both heat and electricity are produced.
Modern wood chip fuelled systems are fully automatic and the most sophisticated are able to modulate their output as required in much the same way as an oil or gas boiler. Some of the latest larger scale systems can even be controlled remotely via modem links. Technology selection depends upon factors such as availability of fuel supply, size and pattern of heat load and user preference. There are several leading manufacturers in the UK, although many systems are imported from Europe which is generally more advanced in terms of both technology and price competition.
