District Heating (also sometimes known as Community Heating) involves piping hot water from a central wood boiler around a network of dwellings or buildings in the same locality.

Text Box: Due to the reductions in both capital and fuel costs provided by the economies of scale, district heating can deliver heat costs competitive with most fossil fuels.
Sites with a constant heat load like leisure centres, hospitals and residential care homes are naturally suited to a district heating infrastructure. Also, where household properties can be matched with places of work so that the heat load is relatively constant, district heating can also be appropriate.

MWEN is currently working on the development of several such projects and is also familiar with the commercial structure required to make schemes work. Often this might involve a dedicated Energy Supply Company (ESCo) which owns and operates the plant, or a partnership between local authority and private contractors.

Funding is currently available for approved community energy developments from the Energy Saving Trust's Community Energy Programme which can offer up to 40% of capital funding. MWEN has been successful in previous applications and is able to assist and advise on further schemes.
