The log boiler is probably the most suitable choice for the household user, especially for those who have access to their own supply of wood. Log boilers are usually installed in conjunction with a hot water tank (accumulator) which acts as a thermal store. The boiler is thus able to burn its charge of logs at a constant rate over a relatively short period, whilst heating is available on demand throughout the day.
Larger household properties can also be suited to automatic wood chip boilers, which remove the need for daily loading. The latest wood chip boilers have sophisticated control mechanisms that allow them to follow the heat load (modulate) in the same way as thermostat-controlled fossil fuel boilers, without compromising efficiency and performance. For further insight, please see the case studies section of the site. MWEN provides free, impartial advice on installing and operating domestic wood boilers and can also make applications for grant support from the government's Clear Skies initiative. Depending upon the choice of boiler, this funding can make the installation of wood fuelled heating cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives. |
