How do I know if my home or business could be economically heated by wood energy? It must be noted that not all buildings are suited to wood fuelled heating. It depends upon a number of factors such as the size of the property, the proximity to a cost-effective supply of wood fuel and the access to alternative fuel options. It can be a complex decision, but MWEN is happy to receive enquiries and provide free, impartial advice for a variety of requirements.
I like the idea of wood energy, but is there an option which avoids having to manually load the boiler every day? Modern wood boilers fed by wood chip are fully automated and operate much in much the same way as traditional oil or gas boilers in that they follow the heat load (modulate) to provide the required level of heating.
How much should I expect to pay for a wood boiler system? Again, this depends upon the size of the building you would like to heat, and also upon whether you would like to use chips or logs as the feedstock. Furthermore, like any consumer item, different prices exist for different levels of product. Typically, a large farmhouse might pay between £5-10,000, with boilers for large businesses and community heating schemes costing significantly more. Yet, grants are available for both domestic and district heating schemes.
How do the costs of wood heating compare with those of more traditional fuels like oil or gas? If close to a cost-effective fuel supply, and away from the mains gas network, wood fuel offers the cheapest per kWh cost of heating. For those with access to their own wood, aside from any labour costs, fuel is free. Thus, over the full lifecycle of the wood boiler, which can be 20 years (twice that of a fossil fuel boiler), a wood heating system can be a highly competitive option.
If I installed a wood boiler, could I easily find the right fuel? In the UK the wood fuel market is, as yet, underdeveloped when compared to other European countries; but also, due to transport costs, it depends upon your proximity to supplies and whether the boiler is a log or chip system. MWEN has a network of contacts around the region for supply of wood fuel, and is also setting up a fuel supply business to supply bulk amounts of wood chip to larger scale installations.
Can an existing central heating and hot water system be integrated with a wood fuelled boiler? Provided you have an existing wet or hot air convection system, and not electric storage heaters, installing a wood boiler should cause no additional issues to the installation of a fossil fuel boiler.
If there is a problem with the wood heating system, are their engineers with the knowledge to fix it? Every wood boiler will usually come with a service contract and warranty in the same way as all fossil fuel boiler systems.
